Spending time with grandkids is one of the great joys of getting older, but do you ever run out of ideas for keeping them entertained? Kids get bored easily doing the same things all the time, and yet, you also have to find activities that are safe for kids and yourself. These engaging activities deliver on fun for everyone without sacrificing safety.
Cooking with kids is an amazing bonding activity. Making something from start to finish that you can then enjoy eating together teaches kids patience, with a rewarding outcome. Share recipes from your childhood or try something new together. Time in the kitchen is special for many families, and you will make wonderful memories when you teach grandkids to cook. Part of teaching kids to cook means teaching safe kitchen practices too, which are important life skills that you can pass on. If you’re still nervous about using the oven with kids, try some no-bake recipes that are simple enough for even small children to help with.
At the beginning of starting our business (almost a year ago!) Sarah and I had a
mission, a heart centered love for what we do and a drive to be able to deliver our passion on our own terms. But that doesn’t truly represent and deliver our why.
Why do we do what we do? I have drafted so many generic, albeit true statements about our why. We want to heal the world, we want to help our community by providing education about massage therapy as health care, not just a luxury. We’ve penned about more specific things like decreasing pain, unlocking frozen shoulder, treating text neck and backpack bumps in teens…and the list goes on and on. All of these are true and valid reasons and results for why we are here, loving what we do. But none of these are a comprehensive description of our why!
I have toiled over how to put into words the truest most heartfelt reasons for our decision to go to massage school, run someone else’s business and finally hang up our own shingle. And then one day it happe...
I’ve learned a lot about changing habits over the years, and have taught thousands of people how to do it.
The hardest habits to change, by far, are the ones people can’t seem to control. They want to change, but can’t seem to find the “willpower” (a term I don’t believe in).
For me, some of the things that seemed out of my control: smoking, eating junk food, overeating during social occasions, procrastination, anger, patience, negative thoughts.
I learned one little secret that allowed me to change it all:
When you are aware, you can change it.
OK, don’t roll your eyes and stop reading yet. That secret might seem obvious to some, or too simplistic. So let’s go a bit deeper.
When we have urges to eat something we know is bad for us, we often give in. But is it that simple? The truth is that our mind is actually rationalizing why we should just eat that cake, why it’s too hard to not eat it, why it isn’t that bad to eat it. It asks why we’re putting ourselves through pain, why can’t we let...
As fall has swept in and the leaves are quickly changing, our business has continued to grow and we are amazed at the outcropping of support and love from all of our clients and our community! Thank you all for that!
We would like to say thank you and invite everyone to help us celebrate Massage Therapy Awareness Week. We will be having an Open House on October 25th, 2017 from noon until 6 pm.
There will be snacks and drinks, drawings and discounts, as well as great company! We hope to see everyone!
It's been a fun ride, scattered with a little stress, a lot of love and a smidge of paint! Or maybe a little more than a smidge of paint!
Sarah and I started with a dream of opening our own wellness center, starting with our style of massage and expanding as time rolls on. The best news is that the rooms are ready, the hearts are brimming and our doors are open! Please come on in and see us, even if just to say hello!
Sure, we all know how to do nothing. We all know how to lay around and waste time. But many of us are too busy to do it much, and when we do it, our minds are often on other things. We cannot relax and enjoy the nothingness.
Doing nothing can be a waste of time, or it can be an art form. Here’s how to become a master, and in the process, improve your life, melt away the stress and make yourself more productive when you actually do work.
Start small Doing nothing, in the true sense of the word, can be overwhelming if you attempt to do too much nothing at once. Do small nothings at first. Focus on 5-10 minutes at a time, and start your practice sessions in a safe place — at home, not at work or in a busy public place. You may also not be ready to do nothing in the middle of nature, so do it in your bedroom or living room. Find a time and place where there are not many distractions, not much noise, not a lot of people to bother you.
Shut off all distractions — TV, computer, cell phones, regu...
‘When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive – to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.’ ~Marcus Aurelius
When I wake in the morning, my mind slowly gathers, and I begin to move, the early morning light just starting to seep in.
I have a glass of water, start the coffee, then meditate. Then I enjoy the coffee, a good book, and the quiet before the dust and din and steam of the day begins. Then I write.
This is my Lovely Morning, and I get an inordinate amount of pleasure from it.
It wasn’t always this way: I used to wake later, rush through a grumpy routine before diving into email and work and errands and meetings. It was frenetic and dreadful, but that was my life, and I didn’t think it would change.
I was wrong. I’ve changed my mornings for the better, with a few simple ideas.
I’ll share them with you here, and if you begin to enjoy the peace of your mornings more, send a smile in my general direction.
Sarah and I have waited a long time to finally reach our dream! We are so excited to announce the GRAND OPENING of our wellness and massage business!
With much love and great hopes, Up North Wellness and Massage will be opening its doors on July 10th! A huge shout out to all of our friends and family who have supported us in making this dream a reality! Thanks to the community for allowing us the opportunity to be here for you and to give back in so many ways.
